Ragi Idli for Babies

Servings: 20

Description

Being south Indians, Idli has always been a staple food for us. It is a super quick and convenient breakfast item that can be paired with chutney, sambar or Idli podi. Finger Millet Idli was a variation to introduce to babies for different taste and for its benefits.

I have shared the Baby recipe of Ragi Idli both Wet Grinder method and Mixer Grinder Method.

Note that the ingredients proportion is different in both the recipe methods and we generally avoid adding Poha in Mixer grinder method for better consistency and texture.

How to serve babies at 6-9M stage

You can cut the Ragi Idli into 3 strips and place it front of the baby on their highchair tray to pick up and eat. Resist the urge to correct their hold or make it easier unless they struggle and are unable to pick it up even after 30sec-1min. I've noticed as long as we stay calm and don't interfere, babies will figure out the best way to eat on their own :)

  1. Soak all ingredients separately. Soak rice overnight or 6 hours.

Ragi preferably needs to soak for a long time (minimum 12 hours). We generally start soaking it the previous day. However if you're doing this, kindly rinse and replace water every 8 hours.

Soak rice overnight or 6 hours.

Urad dal and Poha should be soaked for 1 hour.

  2. Add soaked ragi to the grinder. Start grinding and add water as required until it is half ground (seeds would be crushed and flattened). This usually 20-25 min.

  3. Slowly add soaked rice to this. After about 15 min, add soaked poha as well and grind to a fine coarse consistency.

  4. Remove the above and keep aside.

  5. Now to the empty grinder, add the urad dal. Add water as required and grind it fine till it becomes frothy.

  6. Remove and add the previously ground batter to this and nicely mix.

  7. Since we are making this for the baby do not add any salt at this stage. Leave outside for 8 hours to ferment. (Alternatively you can keep aside a small portion to ferment for the baby and add salt to the remaining at this stage itself)

Note

Note: You can preferably try this out at 8M+ as the whole Ragi along with the husk is being used and some babies might not like this texture at a younger age. You can decide as per your preference.
