Black eyed peas are extremely nutritious being rich in both fibre and protein. They are a great source of energy. I actually didn't know much about these until I started researching about nutritious foods that I can start giving S. It's extremely easy to modify for serving babies.
We introduced this to S when he was 6.5 months old. He wasn't too keen with the texture initially and had only a couple of bites. Planning to reintroduce it in a couple of weeks.
Since black-eyed peas are quite small, they would pose a choking hazard if offered whole. They would need to be steamed and mashed well to serve. You can offer it mashed on preloaded spoons or let your baby hand scoop it. Alternatively, you could spread it over a different finger food as well.
Soak black-eyed peas overnight.
Wash and rinse the soaked beans. Add a little water (just enough to submerge 3/4th of the beans) and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
Remove the Baby's portion. Mash well and serve to Baby. You can offer it mashed on preloaded spoons or let your baby hand scoop it.
Heat the pan and add Oil, Once Oil is heated, add Jeera.
Once it sputters, add finely chopped Onion, Garlic and Ginger
Once the Onion turns translucent add Coriander powder and sauté for 2 min
Add finely chopped tomatoes, Add Turmeric
1 Tsp of chilly powder, salt and sauté well. (we have not included salt, Chilli Powder in the ingredients for the benefit of young Mothers who should not even accidently add Chilli to babies)
Once the tomato is well cooked, add precooked black-eyed peas
Slightly mash and add about half cup water and mix well
Let it boil for a few minutes
Remove from flame and mix well.
Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves
